Game Changers…Azage
Chugging right along with Game Changers, next up is Azage.
Atlanta based, Toronto born this artist is coming up on the scene with a return to lyricism fused with Caribbean culture, ATL hardships, and up north sensibility. LEGGO….
GP: Are you signed to a label or strictly independent?
I’m strictly independent but if the right situation presents itself I’m at the table.
GP: What is the origin of your rap moniker?
Anything I would have come up with someone else would have had. So I use my real name because that’s giving you all of me. being real. It’s about being true to myself, my fans and the music. It’s a representation that whatever you’re getting is 100% me.
GP: How are you differentiated from the pack of ATL rappers that’s being pushed out now?
I’m a lyricist coming from the south, I have something to say. While the East Coast has never been out of my system, the Atlanta sound has influenced me also along with having a West Indian heritage around me so much growing up. I feel I make worldly music. I have a fusion of my music and upbringing and nowadays people are more accepting [sonicly] so it’s an advantage.
GP: What was your push behind “The Bars” mixtape series?
I wanted people to get familiar with my sound and to show consistency.
GP: What is the difference between the Toronto and Atlanta music communities?
I feel it’s a “crabs in the barrel” mentality there (Toronto). While in Atlanta, everyone does what they have to do to get on. They support their own.
GP: Who or what has been the most influential on your career?
My mother! She passed when I was young but she was my 1st and biggest supporter. She took me to my first audition for a manager of a group called Ghetto Concept out of Toronto. She helped start my career. I always push on knowing how much she believed in me and my dream.
GP: What has been your “A-ha” or “I made it moment” so far?
I’d say after the first “Bars” mixtape just getting recognition from deejays and other artists that I respect in the game. Also getting some radio spins.
GP: Where do you see yourself in the industry in five years?
I’m going to be more involved with all aspects of this game. I want to be further invested in my own business. I also want to be further branded as an artist and influence a lot more people.
