“Our lovely model, Chris, has lived on Mercer Street for a few decades by choice. I’m calling this series The Original Hipster because on most days he doesn’t even look like he’s truly homeless.“ – Julia Chesky
My 1st glance at these photos reminded me of when I lived Back home In California, and I used to always see this homeless guy named Fred with a starbucks cup that looked exactly like this man above. He would always ask me about my Photography each time I walked by and if I wasn’t running late to work, I would sit down and chat with him. I thought about doing a photoshoot with him because his lifestory was something I believe the world needed to see. He never asked me for any money, just wanted a ear to vent too, which is why he would have been the perfect subject because everything about him came off so natural. I love the rawness of these photos shot by Julia, and the fact that she threw in the Marc Jacob’s shopping bags makes it even more powerful. Very affective shoot.
Here are photos I shot of Fred.
These photos are much more than a helpless soul that is hopeless and without. I always ask my mother how do you know if a homeless person really wants help, and she told me if you can see the glare in his eyes he sincerely means it. The glare in Fred’s eyes were clear as day, and It was something about this moment I had to capture. I think it was the fact that he held up this starbucks cup covering his face from all the human beings as if they were devils and he was fearing for his life… Society.
