Tough Bond, named after a commonly huffed adhesive, is a new documentary about four homeless children in Kenya who band together in a family. It looks devastating. The film was shot, directed and edited by the non-profit, California-based film collective Village Beat, with an original soundtrack by London/Malawi’s The Very Best and Nigerian-born Seye.

Before his untimely death, even before he was taken under the wing of Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat was something of legend. He’s since become an enduring art icon. His street art sensibility, youthful energy, and handling of themes of racism, class, psychology, and popular culture keep his art relevant from year to year. However, Basquiat’s popularity is enjoying a special renewal over the course of 2013. The hugely popular Basquiat retrospective at Manhattan’s Gagosian Gallery will be followed by another at Gagosian’s Hong Kong gallery later this month. Additionally this month, Basquiat’s painting Dustheads is expected to fetch up to $35 million dollars in auction at Christie’s. In conjunction with the auction, Christie’s has released a three-part video series on Jean-Michel Basquiat. The first video features Basquiat’s early partner in graffiti, Al Diaz. The second in the series speaks with fellow contemporary artist Toxic on Basquiat’s transformation into an art-star. The third installment speaks with Macklemore, one of many contemporary rappers to express inspiration from the late artist. (more…)

Greedmont TV presents We Ballin’ a Hip-Hop musical structured around the lives of two best friends, A.ware and Corey(Mach Five), who are on a quest to fund a loft party they’ve been planning for later that evening. Along the journey Corey struggles with the ins & outs of relationship quarrels, after an uneventful encounter a with jealous girlfriend. While A.ware indulges in the fast life following their “Live Fast, Die Young” moniker. The first of its kind since Jay Z’s The Streets is Watching, Mach Five tastefully includes records from the duo’s recently released Art Rap LP to bring the story full circle.

In a city plagued with the epidemic of homelessness and poverty, Ben Styles takes a deeper look into the lives of a few affected. What was the determining factor of leading such a lifestyle? Bad decisions? Drugs? A toxic concoction of both? What’s the difference between a hobo and a homeless person? A house full of laughter harmonized with great music, the smell of paint mixed with the urban dictionary definition of loud, small dogs with big barks not to mention the countless goddesses entering and exiting. The walls bleed creativity whilst positive vibrations illuminate every room. There’s inspiration everywhere your eyes can see–pure artistic chaos. This is a home fit for an artist–this is the prestigious Greedmont Mansion, and the setting for my interview with Corey Davis and A.ware better known as Hip-Hop duo Mach Five.
They’ve been knighted by Complex Magazine as one of the more worthy acts in the city of Atlanta that your attention should be undividedly engrossed in. Mach Five’s latest album Art Rap has been posted all across the interweb and drawing new fans toward their biggest project yet. Our interview starts at the beginning–chapter one before the creation of Mach Five; on a high school bus in Atlanta where marijuana and Midwestern rap roots act as the bridge that brings the two visionaries together. By the end of the interview, I had 2 hours’ worth of classic stories, revelations, and insight. Condensing it into an article short enough for a generation plagued by ADD and accustomed to only reading 140 characters wasn’t an easy task, but believe that Corey and A.ware have a story worth telling, worth reading, and music worth turning all the way up.
