TRAILER FOR ACCLAIMED CONGOLESE ACTION DRAMA VIVA RIVA!

Synopsis: VIVA RIVA! is the tale of Riva (Patscha Bay), a small time operator who has just returned to his hometown of Kinshasa, Congo after a decade away, with a major score: a fortune in hijacked gasoline. Wads of cash in hand and out for a good time, Riva is soon entranced by beautiful nightclub denizen Nora (gorgeous French actress Manie Malone in her screen debut), the kept woman of a local gangster. Into the mix comes an Angolan crime lord relentlessly seeking the return of his stolen shipment of gasoline.

It is obvious to most that African influence is notably big within the inspirations and trends of Fashion. Brands like Anthropology and Urban Outfitters show admiration through the reproduction of African prints and textiles within their collections and everyone loves a luxurious print from the Animal Kingdom, our favorite possibly being Leopard. As I came across this Thierry Mugler ad it became blatantly apparent to me where this inspiration spawned. Our Ancient African Ancestors, The Yoruba. They depicted themselves and their peculiar head shapes in their own artifacts, yet I could imagine that most people would be prompted of the thought of Alien upon first glance.
What’s interesting is there is an obvious indication of admiration for Ethnic Indigenous and Tribal Cultures within the Fashion Industry, yet a standard History of Fashion textbook would skip these same Cultures only to briefly highlight Egyptian society and culture. And not to mention the big gap and lack of usage of Brown models within the Industry. I see the strong African and Inuit influence in the current trends within Prints and Patterns and RTW Fall 2011, but I want to see more representation of Brown and Ethnic models on runway, in publication, and in history for the records.

This is a video that I just watched that is very dear to my upbringing, this child was me about 15-20 years ago. I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa and contrary to popular belief had one of the greatest childhood a kid can ever ask for. I had both parents, we had tons of money, a great education, videos games, tv, etc.. name it and I had it. So when I moved to America at the tender age of 13 I was very surprised as to the many stereotypes that people had in regards to being African. I just didn’t understand it! I mean before I moved to America I spoke English, I knew everything about popular culture and best of all I knew who Michael Jordan was; matter of fact I knew every prominent NBA player at that time. Over time I realized that the media depicted Africans in a very scornful manner and this trickled down to the kids watching it who would later ask me dumb ass questions like “Do you own a Lion?” or “Do you know any child soldiers?” I’ve yearned for a video like this and it’s really time for people to Terminate The Stereotype. Sit back and enjoy the intelligence of this young Tanzanian boy and hopefully a video like this will start to change some of the ignorant stereotypes towards Africans.

I recall early mornings waiting on my mother to get ready to go to work and drop me off to school in New York. There, admiring my single, working mother I gained essential fashion rules. More times than not, I find myself breaking those rules like a true style renegade. I wear black with brown, I mix prints, and sometimes if the mood is right I stack on more instead of taking things off. However, some things have never been shattered by my rebellion. My mother told me that accessories are the cornerstone of any fashionista’s closet and shoes are the punctuation to every outfit.
With that being embedded in me as a child like the pledge of allegiance, it makes sense that designer and visionary, Melody Ehsani is someone who I had to sit-down with and get to know a little better.
Melody Ehsani is the designer behind some of the hot accessories you see being rocked by Beyonce, Jazmine Sullivan, Keri Hilson, and Nicki Minaj. Her bold, imaginative accessories are also paired with equally breath-taking shoes that balance beautifully between feminine elegance and modern funk. It’s no surprise that Melody Ehsani is as sweet and interesting as her designs.
