I just finished listening to Janelle Monae’s latest effort (The ArchAndroid) three times, and after each listen I recall simply muttering a single word. However, since I’m able to utilize more- I will! And here *insert orchestral overture here* is my review of The ArchAndroid.
The album doesn’t begin abruptly as soon as you pop it in like some may expect. The first track is soft and sensual, yet demanding of your attention and emotion- preparing you for what’s to come. The sound of applause leads you into Dance or Die- a song featuring the calm and collected voice of spoken word artist, Saul Williams. The track has the potential to raise many eyebrows as they hear Janelle spit rhymes about protecting our minds from degradation, making us glance at the back of the album to make sure we didn’t overlook a mention of Lauryn Hill! One can only dream…
Janelle doesn’t miss a beat as she pulls your attention gently over to a letter to her lover, reminiscing about that magical day that they became “magnets at play who smash in and then pull away- every day.” She sings of the feelings derived from fear that’s constantly coaxing her to run faster and faster from his arms, though her heart beats for him. The next song seems to display the creativity of the late, great Micheal Jackson as she purrs over claps, snaps, and strokes of a bass guitar about being “locked inside of a land called Foolish Pride where the man is always right and hates to talk, but loves to fight.” Oh, haven’t we all experienced such a land? I always been a fan of Janelle Monae, so I was extra stoked to hear she released a new single called “Tight Rope” from her forthcoming full-length LP, The ArchAndroid, the second installment to the Metropolis saga. It’s been long overdue. The tracko features OutKast member and longtime friend, Big Boi. The single will be available on February 12th, officially via her website, JanelleMonae.com, in addition to another track, titled “Cold War.”
