“Being a music artist, I already create visuals through verbal context,” upcoming rapper Cashflow Ellis explains the similarity of being an aspiring rapper and filmmaker.
Born Cameron Ellis, the aspiring rapper became intrigued with the hip-hop genre at the young age of 13. “Everywhere I looked someone was playing rap music,” he adds. Beside the influence from his surroundings, Ellis found the “originality and creativity” of legendary rappers Nas and T.I. as motivation to elevate his career as a rapper. “If one of them called me right now I would drop everything I have and fly exactly where they at,” he jokes.
Ellis, who created his stage name from a venue (of the same name) for performing artists, is from Hammond, IL, a small city located three hours away from Chicago. Being so close from the city that birthed legendary rappers Common and Kanye West, Ellis doesn’t feel the pressure to compete or try to be better than them. “I honor the hip-hop legends in the rap game and respect what they did for the younger breed of emcees,” he says. “They opened doors for Chicago artists to be heard and seen.”
Ellis, now 17, attends Columbia College in Chicago, IL with a major in film and video. He also has a minor in acting with a concentration in screenwriting. “Most successful people in the entertainment and music business don’t quite have the plan b or education tools needed for a background or a degree to fall back on,” he explains his reason for pursuing a higher education in spite of his ambitions of becoming a rapper. He also says that he feels comfortable in his studies and its relation to the hip-hop culture.
