With the news full of all these pro-republican and democratic positions, it gets a bit overwhelming being able to come up with a “personal” position that wasn’t brought to you by a biased opinion. And, finding time to research and create a based answer becomes time consuming.
“ill theory is an original web series documenting critical thought as processed by young people of color regarding various relevant social issues. these topics range from identity representation in mainstream media, to dating culture, sexual violence, and education among many others.
the first episode, “ill politricks,” is a two part engagement on the current U.S. federal election, releasing in installments both before and after Election Day.”

On January 12, 2012, bloggers, journalist, students, professors, some of DC’s most influential people, 7 panelist, and a moderator took part in one of the most important conversations in 2012, thus far. Broadcasting live on C-SPAN, the internet, and a few radio stations, Americans got the opportunity to listen in first-hand on the opinion on how poverty in America can be reduced, if not removed. Tavis Smiley, as moderator of this great event at George Washington University, asked some of the questions that has been hovering over most Americans heads.

RATM is one ofe my favorite groups of all time, arguably the most provocative band of the last 20 years, since their explosive debut, they have been the group most associated with the American protest movement. This film dissects the work and career of RATM and looks at their place in this always fascinating lineage of artists and performers who have spoken out on behalf of, and drawn attention to, the world’s marginalized, downtrodden and oppressed.

I’m not going to rant, but if you live in Atlanta and especially if you go to college you know that the HOPE scholarship has vanished (or is being threatened to or there’s a bill). The specifics aren’t clear, but for our Greedy people outside of Georgia, HOPE scholarship is a scholarship that pays for all of your tuition and contributes to your books and housing for as long as you keep a respectable GPA (3.0). Yeah, one of the states with one of the highest drop-out rates in the country has (or use to have) one of the most progressive and future-centric programs that make sure that as long as you work hard and do well, you had a fair shot at a higher education. Man, they might as well have called it something catchy like “No Child Left Behind: Obama Edition”. Anyway, that died. I’m pissed and so are these witty kids that had a vigil/protest for the HOPE scholarship. I wasn’t there because I was studying. Here are some of the pictures taken at the protest after the jump by acclaimed Atlanta photographer, Pastiche Lumumba.

As March 8th rapidly approaches, Lupe Fiasco prepares for the release of his long awaited album, Lasers. While on a promotional tour, he stopped by Clark Atlanta University to give deeper insight into his new project. What many expected to be a small listening session and concert turned out to be a discussion/interview on issues around the world as well as in the black community, through the eyes of Lupe Fiasco, and how, as a Hip-Hop artist, he’s pushing listeners to become active. Bordering the lines of a revolutionary bard and mainstream artist, Lupe Fiasco introduces the L.A.S.E.R.S. Manifesto. (more…)

“What’s the fuss about”
There was blaze set months ago. The fire has not died down. There was an energy amongst the people to get out there to vote during the primaries like never before. When have the primaries been a big deal? On a regular Wednesday, when a mass of people riding the trains and busses to work would just look all disconnected, one woman spoke with urgency. “Please”, she implored, “Please if you have not already, please register to vote. The deadline is October the sixth”. She encouraged everyone to vote and she departed the train at her stop. We’re not talking about a crazy woman that smells like cats and rain, or some angry fist pumping woman with dreads. We’re talking about a 40 something, calm professional. She did not use any colorful language about the current president or any insults. I made my guess about whom she would cast a vote for.
Black people voting for Barack Obama are voting for something more than a president. People who ordinarily would skirt the political process are draped in Obama t-shirts and making an effort to register voters in their counties. We never seemed to matter but Obama’s rousing 3 words, “Yes We Can” hit close to home with a lot of US. There is changing of the guard that comes with an Obama Presidency. You’d find a new Patriot in this country. Its cool to be political now so the kid who wanted to be a rapper and a ball player can add president to that list. Who says this race is not about color? Its probably less about red and blue states at this point. For lots of black people this race is about race.
Black people are renewing their vows. I never fell out of love with my blackness but its like seeing a romance film with your girl, she’ll hold your hand at the touching moments. She’ll shoot you a glance when the two characters do something that reminds her of the two of you. Blacks seem to be reconnected. Barack’s story resonates with a lot of us so this is deeper than choosing the next president. Its about a future you wished for long ago. I’m glad my pops is still around to see this. My mother is pumped (and sounding like she ain’t baking another cookie for me if I don’t go vote). The romance doesn’t have to end yet. That flame that was rekindled does not have to burn out just yet. This blaze could remain hot for another 8 years. How does that sound? Getting off the bus today to come into the office the bus driver said two words to me, “Go vote”.
I got you.
