Air Force 1:Anatomy of an Urban Legend Film

Sunday, August 15, 2010 by | No Comments | Category: Entertainment

Air Force 1’s were a sort of status symbol in the early 2000’s. I remember Nelly coming out with the “Air Force 1” song and it dawning to me that I had to have a pair. And so, the search began. The thing is, not only do I have really small feel but they’re high-arched, narrow, and so my shoes were either too small, too large and I never could seem to get the cinderella perfect fit. Foot Locker, after Finish Line, after Sport’s Authority I trekked, but to no avail. I watched in despair as my brother accumulated an Air Force collection that would have made Nelly proud, while I was stuck wearing FILAs and K-Swiss. And so it dawned on me, with fashion there are sacrifices. With that notion being settled I decided that I was going to go to Finish Line and whatever size they had in stock that was closests to my size, a size 5.5, I would settle for. Horrible idea, I wanted the classic white, which was pretty popular at that time and the closests they had in stock that evening was a seven. But, I had made up my mind, was determined to stick to my guns, and so I bought them. The following day, I wore them to school and boy did I think I was fresh [swag was not yet a word that Soulja Boi had placed in my vernacular], that is until my heels started slipping out and in one instance, my whole foot shot out.

Six years later, I have parted with those damn Air Forces and now collect penny loafers, oxfords, peep toes and stilettos, but my evolution of style started with the sacred 1’s. I’m not the only one who has crazy stories to share about these classic sneakers, and I am sure I am joined by millions. Air Force 1: Anatomy of an Urban Legend is a full length documentary that that hails the shoe as a legend and acknowledges its role in the urban community. I really like the concept of this documentary because whether you were are a sneaker head that now rocks Toms and Vans or a fashionista that now saves up for Fendi pumps, you still acknowledge the era when Air Forces reigned.

Louis Vuitton Emblems+Shaved Vaginas= Dope Artwork.

Kanye West claims that he’s got the power to make lives so exciting. This past week when he joined twitter, hundreds of thousands were treated to the luxuries of his life as he twitpiced after twitpiced the expanses of his luxurious existence. Like vermin succumbing to the bait, fans flocked to his page, and comment after comment they aided in the boosting of his already expanded ego. The average were treated to figments of his expense that they didn’t even know were possible; the most antique crowns, gold plated chairs that Greek and Roman gods and goddesses were made envious of, goblets so heavily encrusted with jewels that a workout was required for just one sip.

Between all the gold and glimmer, a gem shone through: Vanessa Beecroft. Most followers of Kanye West saw the naked chocolate and vanilla girls shaped into the Luis Vuitton emblem and immediately hailed it a work of art. I however, find that praise to be superficial, for if they saw the expanse of Vanessa Beecroft’s work, they would hail it a work of the gods with a sprinkle of insanity.

“VB 66” has tits everywhere. Mounds, curves, the plumpest of asses and the most beautiful of flesh. White full figured women standing with their groomed vaginas for the world to see.  Sounds like the opening scenes of your favorite porno, but instead this is the very essence of Vanessa. A factory of naked humans. Photographs of her work look like infantries of a Natzi army, flesh everywhere, and upon being called racist she has obliged in adding in splashes of ethnic color. It can’t be sexist because she herself is a female. However, the fact that her performances simply have nude models standing in place for no rhyme or reason, excites and angers bra burners from all corners of the globe. She is a living controversy. She attempted to buy children for the purpose of art. The documentary which followed her during one of her art projects, “The Art Star and Sudanese Twins” prompted an uproar when her obsession with the idea of adopting Sudanese twins to showcase them in her work was shown at the SunDance film festival. In a darkened alley, cameras roll as she shoo’s orphanage sisters away, and attempts to strip the motherless, bastard orphans naked to photograph them.

But amongst all the nudity, there are symbols. The stripping away of labels, and mere-less ‘artifacts’ that we accessorize ourselves with; Vanessa’s art is about getting to the essence of female and human identity. Take for example her 2005 exhibit, where she has African immigrants dressed in high end suits devouring meat with no knives or forks. A black last supper, or perhaps a symbolic representation of the prejudices that were once held towards Africans, where they were thought to be primitive and ill developed.

Is it sexist, is it stupid, hell is it a living massacre? Vanessa Beecroft makes me feel some type of way. It isn’t as strong as the time that I denounced Terry Richardson as a million dollar porn photographer, no it’s quite the opposite, it’s a more endearing connection/affection.

Greedmont Park x Bishme Cromartie [Interview]

Thursday, August 5, 2010 by | No Comments | Category: Entertainment, Fashion

Let’s be honest, a high school senior’s accomplishments are few. Being able to make it through the SAT’s, spring break, prom night and all those senior skip days with your head still on straight, is considered one of the biggest feats for most. Most “kids” are satisfied with the basic life, plagiarized test here and there, barely making it out of the bah-hum-bug concrete jail cells that the school system has dubbed “classrooms”. You’re lucky if you come out with some type of talent and for most this “talent” is being able to locate the caps lock key on a standard keyboard.

That being said, I would like to introduce to the world a young man by the name of Bishme Cromartie. How does he fit into all of this? Bishme will be graduating from high school in June. Why do you care? Before you stop reading and flip to the next page, let this sink into your medulla oblongata: Bishme is a designer who started sewing at the age of nine and fully designing at the age when most people were learning the different componentes of a cell, fourteen. He started his fashion line YingEdge at the age of fifteen and he admits that it is more of a “movement and learning process”. How did he come up with the name? Simple. There is an edge in all of us. Cracked Out Faces and Popped Glocks [Uffie Interview].

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 by | 7 Comments; | Category: Entertainment

Before Nicki Minaj, there was Lil’ Kim. Before Lady Gaga, there was Madonna. Before Lindsay Lohan was taunting the justice system with ‘Fuck You’ nails and Ke$ha was shocking our ears with morning after stories of bottles of jack, and feeling like P.Diddy; there was Uffie. Not giving a fuck, desensitized, and partying until the sun comes up, let’s face it, Uffie is the mascot of our generation. With the recent turn of events concerning Lohan, the hipster and party scene has been in a sort of stand still. What better time to have a chat with the girl who started it all?  From Pharrell, to baby Henrietta, to her latest album “Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans”, this past week Uffie and I had a chance to reminisce about the recent turn of events that have occurred and are occurring in her life.

Uffie’s debut album: Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans, has been highly anticipated and for well reason. Although the Hong-Kong raised and Paris based rapper for the most part stuck to her hip hop roots, other genres such as pop, electro and house are meshed through out the album. While “Pop the Glock” is a laid back, let’s get blown type single, “MC’s Can Kiss” is a finger snapping tune, with catchy cocky lyrics such as “Yeah I got something MCs can kiss/ It’s a nice bum cheek and it goes like this”. When asked about the audience that she wanted the album to attract Uffie stated, “ The album crosses a lot of genres, so I think there’s a bit of something for everyone on there”. Still not satisfied, we probed deeper. If Sex, Dream and Denim Jeans was being played at a club, what type of crowd would it attract? To which she replied, “Many, many different people.” (more…)

Incorporating the Best of Fashion Week Swim 2011 Into Wardrobe.

Monday, July 26, 2010 by | No Comments | Category: Style

At the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim for the 2011 year, we were treated to the most gorgeous of models wearing the most seductive and revealing of swimwear. Designers experimented with patterns, fabrics and some were even daring enough to experiment with cuts. Although the designer lineup was heavy and the labels strong, some stood out more than the rest. Ed Hardy was same-old, same-old, A.Z Araujo brought some exotic gods to the runways but the cuts and fabrics that he employed for his collection were rather dreary. Although there were some misses, the hits were to die for.

Aquarella, was a breath of fresh air. The designer employed the most fun of fabrics and playful of cuts. The bikinis were low and plunging in all the right places and there was a spirit of fun in the air as the carefree models paraded down the runway. Talk about a hit. Fun prints and bright summer/spring appropriate fabrics. Beach Bunny was to die for. See-through, slashed, caged, one-shoulder, one-piece, even lace. With only 18 models the collection gave you every type of cut, fabric and silhouette available. All the looks were sultry and any babe wearing them is going to be a hit at a cabana, pool or beach near you. This collection would be able to suit anyone’s taste. There was sultry, bohemian, racy, tropical, simple yet fun one-pieces and even the more exotic two pieces. Even the cover-ups were oodles of fun. Silky, light-weight rompers that were draped in all the right places.

Cia Maritima had designs worthy of brazilian goddesses. Triangle-cut bikinis and the tiniest of bikini bottoms, that I am positive we will see featured in Sports Illustrated, Play Boy and other sexy publications. The cover-ups were luxurious, my favorite being the floor-length bohemian sun dress. For me to say that this collection wasn’t a hit would be a sin. For the Trina Turk show, the bathing suits were rather dull but the cover-ups were a hit. See-through, meshed, floral floor-length, and cute skirts to cover up sexy bikini bottoms.

Now, I know you’re wondering: How do I incorporate these bikini looks into my everyday wardrobe? The task may seem impossible and a little raunchy, but it actually isn’t. Bathing suit cover-ups such as sundresses can be worn alone as actual dresses. And if you aren’t a fan of sundresses, you can incorporate some of the other types of dresses that the designers employed as cover-ups. For those a little on the daring side I’ve got a little something special for you. Although the one-piece was once a swimwear garment reserved for the plus-sized or self-conscious, some of the slashed and one-shoulder one-pieces can be used as bodysuits. American Apparel has made millions selling body suits, and they have the same concept as one-piece bathing suits. Just make sure that the bathing suits aren’t too raunchy and cover you up in all the appropriate places. The more daring of fashionistas may go for the slashed and heavily exposed of suits, but I would recommend a simple one-shoulder paired with your favorite pair of jeans or shorts. Imagine this: A tribal monokini paired with your best fitting pair of wide-leg jeans. You’ll look like something straight out That 70s Show.

Also, since the fact that you’re wearing a bathing suit as a top is going to stir quite some attention, don’t overdue the sexy, by pairing sexy with even more sexy. Keep the pieces that you’re going to wear on the bottom simple and the accessories minimum. Experiment, experiment, the worse thing that can happen is that you leave the house a little too exposed.

La Vita Spring LookBook 2010 Teaser.

Sunday, July 25, 2010 by | 1 Comment; | Category: Style

I’ve had my eyes on the boys over at La Vita for a while now. They’re designers, to look out for. This spring 2010 Lookbook has got me convinced that they are the new face of streetwear. While every other designer is sticking to t-shirts on girls with DD, and boring white sets, La Vita is bringing you ads that are comparable to that of Dolce&Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, the list goes on and on. And if you’re still not convinced of the talent behind La Vita, factor in that these kids are only 19 years old, yet masterminds behind a brand that has been applauded by Amber Rose, Coco&Breezy. This photo is a teaser for their upcoming lookbook, so I’l be sure to keep you guys updated.

SuperNovas and Chasers [Mr.Hudson Interview]

Monday, July 19, 2010 by | 9 Comments; | Category: Entertainment, Interview

When you think of Western rap icons like Run DMC, Tupac Shakur, Kid N’Play, never in the same train of thought do you think of European pop stars such as Sting or U2. And Why not. 2Pacalypse Now was corrupting the kids around the same time that Sting’s pop rock “All This Time” was circulating European cafe shops. And let us not forget U2’s  ”Achtung Baby” which was receiving acclamation and blasting reviews while Kid N’ Play threw out their platinum FunHouse album followed by Face the Nation, but still, never in the same sentence are these cultural icons intertwined. I guess at that time in musical history our musical palate was a little to similar too our literal palate; salt to salt, sugar to sugar. We adored our skinny European white guys who sung of Bloody Sundays and we loved our black men with high top fades who were doing the kick step, but sweet and sour, or the idea of sprinkling just a little bit of sugar in our grits was unheard.

These days however, the tide has changed. Eminem hashing things up with Elton John for “Stan”, Jay-Z fans and metal head Linkin Park groupies agreeing when it came to “Numb”, Nelly and Tim McGraw giving you “Over and Over”. You see, musical artist aren’t so exclusive to their genres anymore. Mr.Hudson is no different to this new wave of musical perception. Having his Straight No Chaser album out in the USA this past week, you can imagine how stressful and hectic his schedule has been. However, between the late night recording sessions, impromptu performances, and the weight that comes with being an overly attractive lad with the most GQ and Tom Ford of accents, Mr. Hudson took some time to catch up with Greedmont. He told me tales of love gone wrong, but also threw in funnier stories, which consisted of Wimbleton tennis outfits worn at the most awkward social situations, and skinny men who sing in high pitch voices. Pro Nails. Kid Sister Interview.

Thursday, June 17, 2010 by | 5 Comments; | Category: Entertainment, Interview

I’m dying in a fit of laughter as Kid Sister goes into detail about her first ever nail installation, “[I was}13 about to be 14 when I first got nails they were blood red and VERY whorey. So racy. I look back at pictures. I was overweight. Looked like a brunette Miss Piggy.” She goes on to assure me that she took a break during college, “Because it’s hard to type with them.” Of course, I start off the interview with nails, especially since it’s Kid Sisters iconic
trademark and the theme behind her chart topping, Kanye West featured single “Pro Nails” that brought her career to sudden and unprecedented fame. Many people know Kid Sister for her electronic, smack talking, and sassy singles and at times, they associate the themes behind Kid Sister’s musical releases to her character. She has been dubbed: care-free, strong, sassy, and uncensored, and it’s not a bad thing. In a world full of females who are content in being Barbara Walters, Honey Bee Home Makers, Martha Stewarts, and Barbies, Kid Sister is Mae West meets Jane Fonda.

At first I was taken back by her bluntness. It came in a disparate variety of truth that you don’t come across often these days. How does love inspire your music? It’s more like lust. How Does Pain inspire you? It doesn’t my life is awesome, I don’t go through too much stuff. Do you ever get compared to Lil Mama? Not really ever. What would be your dream collaboration? Someone no one would think I’m a fan of like Hurricane Chris or something…
