Feb. 10, 2004 was the release date of Kanye West’s debut album, The College Dropout.
I remember at the young age of 13 wanting to listen to this guy’s music and the eagerness I felt when I had the album in my hands during the ride home. I had just grew out of, not literally, my pop music days of Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and Britney Spears. I never had an interest in the genre of hip-hop and assumed that most of the music was about drugs, violence and sex. I was unaware of conscious rap and it’s intention of good in the rap industry. Artists such as Common, Talib Kweli and Mos Def were only names in my head and I never took the time to listen to them. Kanye had all of the artists on his album. Overnight, I fell in love. the production, the features, the lyrics- my heart was mended. The pop music era had died and will never be born again. It was the debut of Kanye West’s album 7 years ago that changed my view on hip-hop and allowed the genre to save my life. I miss the mascot bear!
