Knock for Knock – (Short Film)

Friday, May 11, 2012 by | No Comments | Category: Culture, Music, Short Film, Video

Antony Crook brings us a short film about a cyclist x boxer from Tokyo, with music from the Scottish band Mogwai. A mix of artistic elements and a persuasive story which is bound to be a shocker by the end of the 6:29 minute film. I couldn’t believe it, don’t think you will either? Trust me.

? (hi) [Digital Painting]

The subtle message in this piece is what first caught my eye. This digital artist, ? (hi), is based out of Tokyo, Japan. His style is a quiet wash of muted colors that add beauty to scarred and mutilated faces. [Note: The artist's name is in Japanese and wouldn't translate to the site.]

Tokyo Tribe

Tokyo Tribe is a manga/anime created by the great Santa Inoue. Think about having different tribes (coolest tribe/gang: Musashino Saru) spread out all over Tokyo with characters looking like a 90′s FUBU ad wearing bubble jackets with a hint of tribute to American hip hop artists. It’s a good read and it is advisable to read the manga first before watching the series (although some of the characters don’t make it in the animation). It is most definitely not your typical cutesy Japanese anime.

Some of the characters were awesome enough to have their own vinyl version.

LOVE is one of the characters in the series that didn’t get that much shine BUT he is the main character from Tokyo Graffiti:)

Kai Deguchi, the main character is pretty fucking awesome.

Minato. Still trying to find what his deal is. Pure badassery.

Enter The Void

French movie realised by Gaspar Noé.
Enter The Void is a wild, hallucinatory mindfuck for adults which sees the director explore new shooting techniques and ambitious special effects to capture a young man’s journey after death.
It takes place in Tokyo where Oscar (a drug dealer) and his sister Linda (a stripper) both live. One night, Oscar get shot by the cops. While he is dying, his spirit (faithful to his sister’s wish which was to never leave her) refuses to quit the living world. His spirit roams then in the city and its visions become more and more chaotic and nightmarish. Oscar’s past, present and future mix in a hallucinatory maelstrom.
If audiences care to, they can lose themselves in Gaspard Noé’s images and trip on his imagination. If they don’t, they will be bored to tears.

It came out on May 5th in France. No date for a release in USA yet.

IDNextra: Neo York

Saturday, April 24, 2010 by | No Comments | Category: Art, Culture

For those who aren’t familiar with animé, this particular genre has a long history that has both encouraged and inspired a creative dialogue between Japan and the rest of the world for almost 100 years. In the United States during the 1970′s and 80′s, Japanese animation was referred to as Japanimation, but was replaced by the term Animé in the mid 1990′s as it became more mainstream and evolved in popular American culture.
It’s the evolution of animé that has inspired this book; where this genre came from and how it has come full circle. Post apocalyptic Tokyo is a strong central theme to most anime story lines. We began to ponder what would Neo New York look like, what would be the cultural make up of the city. We invite some great talent to contribute their visions to help with the creation of Neo New York.

Make sure you buy this second installment of IDN mag which features an anime perspective of NYC.
